The Gemasolar Power Plant near Seville in southern Spain consists of an incredible 2,650 panels spread across 185 hectares of rural land. The mirrors - known as heliostats - focus 95 per cent of the sun's radiation onto a giant receiver at the centre of the plant.

1. Gaziantep, Turkey (3650 B.C.?)

The capital city of Gaziantep Province informally known as Antep is the
oldest city that’s still standing, with a history dating back to the Hittites
period. It was continually inhabited ever since the Paleolithic age,
experiencing serious growth along with the Ottoman Empire. Today,
Gaziantep is a friendly, upbeat city with numerous mosques, medresse,

destination, Kirkuk stands on the site of the ancient Assyrian, once being
the battlegrounds for three empires, Assyria, Babylonia, and Media that
took turns controlling the city. Sights include the citadel, the tomb of
Prophet Daniel, and Al Qaysareyah Market. If you want to go back in time
and see the remains of the ancient city, visit archaeological sites of Qal’at
Jarmo and Yorgan Tepe, located at the outskirts of the city.

4. Zurich, Switzerland (3000 B.C.?)

Switzerland’s biggest city and one of the oldest cities in Europe, Zurich was
established in Roman times under the name Turicum. Traces of these times
can be found throughout the Old Town – narrow streets filed with antique
shops, boutiques and cafes. Shopping is concentrated around the famous
Bahnhofstrasse, one of the most beautiful shopping streets in Europe.
Besides shopping, you can explore the city’s culture by visiting
Grossmünster or Fraumünster – two old churches with amazing interiors,
the Swiss National Museum or Kunsthaus, another popular museum. Head
down to Aussersihl – a newly developed area filled with bars, clubs,
restaurants where you can get a taste of the real Swiss life. After seeing

5. Konya, Turkey (2600 B.C.?)

Located 250 km from the Mediterranean Sea and 500 km from the Black
Sea, at an altitude of over 1000 meters in the Anatolian steppe, Konya is
one of Turkey’s most fascinating cities, full of mosques and museums. One
of the most popular museums is the Green Mausoleum of Mevlana
Celaleddin Rumi, a great Turkish poet. Konya has a vast array of historical
finds, kept in several museums, such as the Archaeological Museum, the
Koyunoglu Museum or the Ethnographical Museum.

6. Giza, Egypt (before 2568 B.C.)

“From atop these pyramids, forty centuries look down upon you.” —
Napoleon Bonaparte to his soldiers before the Battle of Giza, 1798.
Contrary to popular belief, Giza is a city in itself, but which got absorbed
by the rapidly developing metropolis of Cairo. It holds one of the most
important attractions in Egypt – the Pyramids of Giza, coupled with the
Sphinx at the base of the Giza plateau. Giza’s desert plateau will be part
of the Grand Museum of Egypt, a project to be completed in 2012 that will
replace the Egyptian Museum in Midan Tahrir.

7. Xi’an, China (2205 B.C.?)

With a history of over 3,000 years, the city is one of the most important in
Chinese history, being one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China.
Xi’an, the eternal city, enjoys fame equal to that of other famous cities
such as Athens, Cairo, or Rome. The abundance of relics and sites of
important cultural significance gained the city the title of a Natural History
Museum. Furthermore, the Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses is
often referred to as “the eighth major miracle of the world”. The City Wall
of the Ming Dynasty is the most well-preserved towns in the world of that
period while the Famen Temple holds the finger bones of Sakyamuni — the
founder of Buddhism. All in all, Xi’an is one of the most valuable places to
get a taste of ancient China and their traditions.

8. Asyut, Egypt (before 2160 B.C.)

Located 375km south of Cairo, Asyut is the largest town in Upper Egypt
and the first settled in Pharaonic times. Today, Asyut is the region’s most
important agricultural center and home of the third largest university in
Egypt. The city has almost 400,000 inhabitants, having the highest
concentration of Coptic Christians. It is said that Virgin Mary appeared in
Asyut, an apparition even attested by the church. Apart from the religious
value, Banana Island is a great place to relax, while the 19th century
barrage on the North Edge of the city is a popular destination among
tourists.

9. Luxor, Egypt (before 2160 B.C.)

Luxor, previously known as the ancient city of Thebes, the glorious city of
the God Amon Ra, has been a hot tourist destination since tourism began.
The area started attracting tourists ever since the Greek and Roman
periods. Luxor is one of the most popular cities in Egypt, its stars being
the monuments of Luxor, Karnak, Hatshepsut and Ramses III. There’s no
wonder the city is often referred to as the world’s greatest open air
museum, having a great number of well-preserved monuments. The city
in itself actually consists of three distinct areas: the City of Luxor on the
East side of the Nile, the town of Karnak and Thebes on the west side of
the Nile, across from Luxor. You can bargain your way for anything in the
city’s bazaar or enjoy the vegetarian paradise Luxor’s restaurants offer its
tourists.

10. Lisbon, Portugal (2000 B.C.?)

Set on seven low hills, on the north banks of the River Tagus, Lisbon’s
charm is strongly linked to the past. Lisbon was first inhabited by Iberian
people, responsible for building the megaliths. After centuries of growing,
Lisbon is now one of the liveliest cities in Europe. The renovated palaces,
magnificent churches and Art Nouveau buildings are just a few of the
things that make up the city’s cultural heritage. There’s an impressive
collection of ancient and modern art in many of the city’s museums such
as the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the National Coach Museum, and the
Carmo Archaeological Museum. When you’ve seen all the cultural
attractions, be sure to head down to Bairro Alto, the center of nightlife,
packed with restaurants, bars and clubs. There are also plenty of shopping
opportunities either for local merchandise at the Campo de Santa Clara or
famous brands in the Centro Commercial Colombo.

Although his paintings are wrapped heavily in skepticism, claustrophia and solitude, the works are above all beautiful, touching self-portaits of a man helplessly adrift in a world lacking in meaningful contact with others. Let's take our usual walk around the new-for-2010 Brutale 990R to take in all the details. At first glance, the casual observer may see very little clues that MV's new naked sportbike is in fact all-new. A closer inspection reveals that nearly nothing is carried over from the last generation. MV claims that over 85% of the 2010 Brutale is new and not interchangeable with the 2009 model, but it still might take a ride or two to prove the new one is sufficiently different from the old. Whether this seemingly carry-over design language is good or bad is up to individual tastes.
As far as we're concerned, the old Brutale was still one of the most visually stimulating designs on the market, and so the fact that the made-over 2010 model looks so much like the previous generation is anything but a bad thing. Further, the more time we spent, the more the unique details and updates jump out at you... so much so that we found ourselves just staring at every angle while conducting our photo shoot as the sun went down behind the mountains. It wasn't until we unloaded our memory card that we realized we had taken over 300 pictures in just one sitting.
Beyond those admittedly minor demerits, we love ourselves some Brutale. Yes, it is indeed less frenetic and easier-going than its forebear, but we're putting those attributes firmly in the Positives column, not the Negative. The newly refined machine is just as engaging as it ever was, the styling of the Brutale still stands up to our critical eyes and the updates made to the bike's ergonomics make it a much more inviting option in the face of stiff competition from the likes of the Ducati Streetfighter and Triumph Speed Triple. Finally, we think the $15,000 asking price is pretty damn attractive for what you're getting.

It is an art that requires a great deal of patience and physical stamina. As with all performing arts, living statue performers may perform as buskers or in commissioned shows. Fifty years ago the Heineken Beer company looked at reshaping its beer bottle to be useful as a building block. It never happened, so Buddhist monks from Thailand's Sisaket province took matters into their own hands and collected a million bottles to build the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew temple. It puts every other bottle building we have shown to shame.

While Augusta National might be steeped in tradition; the Himalayan Golf Course in Pokhara, Nepal is steeped in some of the largest mountains in the world. Set within a sweeping canyon created by Himalayan snow water, the HGC is truly the most exotic golf courses in the world.

Located just seven kilometers (4.35 miles) away from downtown Pokhara, the twice played 9 hole course is well laid out for championships at 6,900 yards with a par of 73. It has 11 greens and different tee positions and lies for the most part inside a sweeping canyon created by the Himalayan snowed waters of the Bijayapur river. The course incorporates Scottish-influenced features such as fairway mounding, split fairways and the use of natural landforms and nature to shape the course. The course has been the venue for the Nepal Surya Western (professional) Open for the past seven years. Framed by the towering the Annapurna range, cattle and buffalo roam freely providing most of the grass mowing.

The course was designed and constructed by an Ex British Army officer, Major Ram Gurung, MBE, and opened for play in January 1998. Major Ram Gurung was exclusively invited to take up the challenge to carve a 9 holes Golf Course from what was previously a desolate wasteland of river boulders and swamps

San Fermin Festival 2010

The festival of San Fermín (or Sanfermines) is a deeply rooted celebration held annually in the city of Navarre, Spain. The celebration starts from 12:00, 6 July, when the opening of the fiesta is marked by setting off the pyrotechnic chupinazo, to midnight 14 July, with the singing of the Pobre de Mí.

While its most famous event is the encierro, or the running of the bulls, the biggest day is 7 July, when thousands of people accompany a replica of the statue of Saint Fermin along the streets in the old part of city

San Fermin is accompanied by dancers and street entertainers. The week-long celebration involves many other traditional and folkloric events.

It is known locally as Sanfermines and is held in honor of Saint Fermin, the co-patron of Navarre. Its events were central to the plot of The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway, which brought it to the general attention of English-speaking people. It has become probably the most internationally renowned fiesta in Spain. Over 1,000,000 people come to watch this festival

This is a street drinking party that lasts for 9 days. “Viva San Fermin!,” this traditional shout from the City Hall balcony started the festival. Unusual Village for Dogs in Brazil

If you are afraid of dogs you better stay away from the city of Caxias do Sul in Brazil, or at least, do not go in the southern part of that city where you will find a whole village made for dogs.

This settlement, built with intention to host hundreds of dogs, contains more than thousand dog houses and it can host about 1600 dogs. It has been built by ‘Ama’ organization which cares for pets. They have been forced to build the village like this because they had no enough funds to build a dog shelter building.

There is a place for cats too where about 200 of cats have found their home.

As reported by Discover Magazine, by 2050, the world population is expected to reach 9 billion people, nearly doubling global demands on food and livestock feed. But there's one major problem: Farms can't keep up.

Until now, humanity's rapid population growth has been countered by the "green revolution"—advances in pesticides, fertilizers, and the genetic modification of crops. But no matter how much we maximize crop yield per acre, the limiting factor for food production is land. And farms use a lot of it.

But if we can't build out, why not build up? Vertical farms are a proposed innovation that might allow us to do just that.

Vertical farms use hydroponics and aeroponics, soil-free growing techniques once researched by NASA to grow plants in space. One major problem with conventional "horizontal" farms is loss of water to runoff. But plant cultivation in either a water-based nutrient solution, shown here, or a nutrient-rich mist enables water to be almost completely conserved.

Not everyone agrees that vertical farms will be economically viable. The biggest concern is energy. As with all indoor grow operations, artificial lighting like fluorescents or the LED's shown here must be supplied for any plant life that isn't exposed to sunlight.
Proponents insist that the reduction of farm equipment needed for harvest and transport would make up the difference by cutting back on fossil fuels. Some even argue that vertical farms could save energy by recycling wastewater and composting non-edible plant material to generate methane energy.

At least on a small scale, vertical farms are no longer just a theory.

In 2009, England's Paignton Zoo launched a program called 'Verticrop' that implemented vertical growing techniques to raise organic plants for animal feed. Using hydroponics, indoor lighting and rotating planters, the zoo has successfully reduced water and nutrient consumption by 95 percent relative to conventional systems.

Large-scale vertical farms, like the "Type O2" design seen above, are still only theoretical, but certain cities have expressed a serious interest in making them a reality. Incheon, South Korea; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and Dongtan, China seem the most likely candidates, but it will be at least another five to ten years before we see them get off the ground.

1. Rambutan
Native to Malay Archipelago, Southeast Asia
Coming from an evergreen tree, the Rambutan fruit resembles the Lychees, have a leathery red skin and are covered with spines. Rambutan is a popular garden fruit tree and one of the most famous in Southeast Asia. The fruit is sweet and juicy, being commonly found in jams or available canned.

Native to southwestern India, Bangladesh, Philippines and Sri Lanka
Jackfruit is a common fruit for Asia and Australia and considered as one of the largest tree borne fruit in the world. The juicy pulp around the seeds have a taste similar to pineapple, but milder. Apart from canned jackfruit, it is also available as sweet chips. The wood of the tree is used for making various musical instruments, while the fruit is a common ingredient for many Asian dishes.

3. Passion Fruit
Native to South America, grown in India, New Zealand, Brazil, etc
The passion fruit has a soft, juicy interior full of seeds, being commonly found in juices to boost their flavors. There are two types of passion fruit: the golden one (maracuyá), similar to a grapefruit and the dark purple passion fruit (gulupa), comparable in terms of size with a lemon. However, the latter ones have been reported as being mildly poisonous.

Coming from an evergreen tree, the lychee or litchi are small white flesh fruits, covered in a red rind, rich in vitamin C and with a grape-like texture. The fruit has started making its appearance in markets worldwide, refrigerated or canned with its taste intact.

The star fruit comes from the carambola, a species of tree with pink flowers grown even in the US. The golden-yellow fruit is crunchy, sweet, with a taste of pineapples, apples and kiwis combined. There are two kinds of star fruits – acidulate and sweet, both rich in vitamin C. The fruit is particularly juice, some even making wine out of it.

6. Mangosteen
Native to the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas.
The mangosteen is another evergreen tree that produces oddly shaped fruits. The fruits are purple, creamy, described as citrus with a hint of peach. It is rich in antioxidants, some scientists even suggesting it can lower risk against certain human diseases, such as cancer. There are even legends about Queen Victoria offering a reward to the one that brings her the fruit.

7. Kumquat
Native to China
The kumquats or cumquats are small edible fruits resembling oranges that grow in a tree related to the Citrus. As with most of the fruits in the Citrus family, the kumquats are eaten raw. Also known as the “King of Fruits,” Durian has a very particular odor, a unique taste and is covered by a hard husk. Having a disagreeable smell, compared to skunk spray or sewage, the fruit is forbidden in hotels and public transportations in Southeast Asia. Still, the whole experience is worth it, considering the absolutely divine taste of the Durian.

Dragon fruit, strawberry pear or pitaya is a fruit of several cactus species with a sweet delicate taste and creamy pulp. The most common dragon fruit is the red pitaya, but other varieties include the Costa Rica pataya and the yellow pataya. Juice or wine can be obtained from the fruit, while the flowers can be eaten or used for tea.

The African cucumber, horned melon or melano is a fruit that can be best described as melon with horns. It originated in the Kalahari Desert and is now present in California and New Zealand. The dark green pulp reminds one of bananas, limes, passion fruit and cucumber. It is often used for decorating food but also in smoothies and sundaes

World's First Tidal Powered Moon Clock

An ambitious project to create the world’s first moon clock powered by the tides is currently planned for the edge of the Thames River in London, England. Designed by UK artist Laura Williams while she was in her third year of a study in an Arts & Design course at Central Saint Martins, the completed Aluna Moon Clock, will be larger than Stonehenge and forty metres wide.

The five storey high structure is made up of three concentric translucent recycled glass rings that illuminate to provide information about the moon. With light generated from the tides, the rings show the Moon’s movement, current phase as well as the ebb and flow of the tides.

Created as both a waterside landmark and public sculpture, the Aluna Project hopes to create Aluna Moon Clocks in both London and Melbourne. [via]
